The de Merc Chamber Choir is a compact, versatile mixed adult choir specialising in a cappella repertoire ranging from the 16th century through to contemporary works.
Currently around eighteen singers, the choir gives listeners the opportunity of enjoying the intricacy and intimacy of unaccompanied singing that is the essence of smaller ensembles.
The choir performs in a wide variety of venues, principally around their home town of Harlow, in Essex and neighbouring Hertfordshire, as well as further afield.
In addition to their regular concert series, de Merc collaborated with Harlow Ballet in a specially choreographed Faure Requiem in the Harlow Playhouse. In 2004, the choir toured Sweden to sing with the Stockholm Cantus, and in July 2014 was privileged to be invited to sing in the inaugural Voices of London Festival at St James' Church.
de Merc is equally at home singing classical music in a tiny village church, light jazz in a concert hall, easy listening at a garden party, or entertaining after a formal dinner, carolling in the local pub, and traditional music for weddings.
This is a review from our one of our most recent engagements:
"I hired the choir for my church wedding in September 2015. I found them to be professional from the outset. Both Richard and Graham contacted me right away following my enquiry. They kept in contact in the months leading up to wedding and made suggestions where appropriate. They were brilliant on the day. They were faultless and I highly recommend them. It was so lovely to hear my favourite hymns being sung. All my guests said what a difference it made to the service and how lovely it was to have them there playing their part too."
The choir enjoys singing unusual and neglected works, commissioning the reprinting of music by Stanford, Stainer, and Rubbra; the entire set of seventeen Madrigals of 1599 by Bennet; and contemporary works from New Zealand and Sweden.
See the menu on the right for more information about our history, how to join the choir, and how to hire our many services, or discuss a joint venture with us.
