de Merc Chamber Choir
Musical Director

Alison Smart Fisher took up the baton as Musical Director of the de Merc Chamber Choir in September 2017, following her highly successful predecessor, Richard Brain.

Alison comes to DMCC from parallel careers as a singer, singing teacher and choral director. After 22 years in the BBC Singers she is extending her conducting work and is delighted to have been appointed by DMCC.

‘I am really looking forward to working with this lovely, skilled choir. Their appetite for music-making is big and they enjoy refining their music.  I love the chamber choir repertoire and look forward to exploring with DMCC some real gems of the genre. This is a choir that enjoys singing in a range of venues in Harlow and the surrounding area. It will be great to get to know the area and meet new audiences.’

Alison has been Director of Music at St Mary-at-Finchley Parish Church in Finchley, London N3 since 2007. She directs the choirs and running the chamber music concert series. She teaches singing privately in N3 and has been teaching at Haberdashers' Aske's Girls School and North London Colligiate School since 2017.  She is Chair of the London Committee of the Royal School of Church Music.

She was Senior Choral Exhibitioner at Clare College, Cambridge, where she took a degree in Classics and also played viola in the Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra. After a few years in publishing she launched her singing career with a season in the West End (on-stage singer and percussionist) and lots of concerts and recordings with The Sixteen, Tallis Scholars and other early music groups. She also enjoyed several seasons in the chorus of the Opéra de Lyon and the Opéra d’Aix-en-Provence. Then she took Postgraduate Diplomas in Vocal Studies at both the RNCM and TCM before joining the BBC Singers in 1995. She is a dedicated recitalist with duo partners Katharine Durran and Yukiko Osedo. She has created 3 solo CD albums.

Alison is married to Professor Andrew Fisher (Director of the London Centre for Nanotechnology, UCL) and has two teenage sons. In her spare time she enjoys running and country walks.
